Case Summary:
Our client in this case was a laboratory manager and technical associate from Taiwan. Her work focused specifically on stem cell biology and pathogenesis of the esophagus, a topic of substantial intrinsic merit. At the time of filing, her publications (comprising 4 peer-reviewed journal articles and 1 book chapter) had been cited at least 30 times, reflecting significant influence within her field. The majority of citations were from independent international researchers, further indicating the extent to which her work is relied upon and recognized. An independent recommender offered this statement about the importance of her research: “Sox2 is long known to play a critical role in the maintenance of the embryonic and many adult stem cells. [Client] showed for the first time that Sox2 is also required for the self-renewal of cancer stem cells in esophagus and Sox2 overexpression in progenitor cells promotes metastasis. Studies of clinical samples from patients supported her findings. Together, these finding has important implications for the understanding and treatment of esophageal cancer, a deadly cancer that is expected to kill over 15,000 United States citizens in 2013.” By means of extensive documentation, we successfully argued that our client would serve the national interest to a significantly greater degree than others with similar education and experience. As a result, her NIW petition was approved in seven months and six days.
